Taking care of our skin is important, but establishing a nighttime skincare routine can be hard. Face it, curling up in bed sounds much better than standing in front of the sink for 20 minutes.

Most nights, I want to crawl right under my sheets and give zero Fs about wiping off my makeup (and don’t even get me started thinking about using anti-aging products). — I have these things called priorities, you know? They include sleep, sleep, and more sleep. There’s a packet of makeup remover wipes at my bedside for when I’m reallllly lazy, too. I’m not proud of it, but hey, it’s better than doing nothing at all on those nights when I just can’t even.

I totally see the value of a nighttime skincare routine, though, and I’m slowly trying to build my collection of nighttime skincare products. But one thing I will not budge on when purchasing skincare products is the quality. It’s extremely important to me to avoid any cosmetics with harmful added chemicals and ingredients. Parabens, phthalates, oxybenzone…there are so many toxic ingredients found in everyday beauty products with super scary side effects. (Some of them aren’t even required to be put on the label.)

charcoalIf you think paying $200 for department store eye cream means it’s any safer than one from the drug store, you’re sadly mistaken. Unfortunately, the more we pay for a beauty product does not guarantee it’s free of harsh ingredients.

Luckily, an increased awareness of these harmful chemicals has prompted most companies to label if they are paraben free. But there are still hundreds of other chemicals that are unregulated for use in the United States cosmetics industry. (Ugh.)

What else is hiding in these products, and should we be concerned about them? Unfortunately, there’s an ever-growing list of these unregulated ingredients doing us more harm than good, hiding in our makeup bags and medicine cabinets.
